MAE Professor wins ORAU Award

NC State University Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Assistant Professor, Dr. Jingjie Hu, has been named as a recipient of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

According to their website ORAU is a consortium of more than 150 major colleges and universities that provides innovative scientific and technical solutions to advance national priorities in science, education, security and health. Additionally, ORAU is committed to supporting young faculty and their professional growth by helping to develop and enrich their research skills through awards like the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award.

The award is open to full-time assistant professors at ORAU member institutions within two years of their tenure track appointment at the time of application. It is a competitive research award that provides seed money for junior faculty members, which often results in additional funding from other sources. The award amount provided by ORAU is $5,000 and the recipient’s institution is required to match the award with at least an additional $5,000.

Dr. Hu’s research focuses on the mechanical behavior of biomedical and biological materials. Her work contributes to the understanding of these materials by focusing on the design, fabrication and characterization of bio related structures through integrated mechanics, materials and bioengineering approaches. Her research combines experimental and theoretical tools that enable the prediction of mechanical behaviors at the nano-, micro- and macro- scales.

There are numerous applications of Dr. Hu’s research, and it impacts critical biomedical applications such as cancer detection and vascular embolization.

With the support of the ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, Dr. Hu will be able to continue her invaluable research and continue to contribute to the development of new solutions and methods in the fields of biomedical and biological materials.

The MAE Department would like to extend it’s congratulations to Dr. Hu and all of the other recipients of  this prestigious award.
