Education That Works
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) is the largest in the state and among the largest and most prominent in the nation. We take pride in our ability to graduate highly skilled, ethical engineers who will be able to stay at the forefront of a rapidly changing world and be the future leaders in technology and society.
The department offers the Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in both Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Aerospace Engineering (AE). The department also offers an accelerated BS/MS degrees in both mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering.
Bachelor of Science
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering provides two ABET-accredited B.S. degrees. The Aerospace Engineering degree program prepares its graduates for careers in aircraft and space systems design, analysis and manufacturing. The Mechanical Engineering degree program prepares its graduates for careers in mechanical and thermal systems design, analysis and manufacturing.
Our Bachelor’s Degrees
- Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering (BSAE)
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
Join Us Change of Degree Application (CODA)
Students who complete first-year engineering requirements can apply to CODA and declare a major in one of our department’s degree programs.
Undergraduate Inquiries: Emma Munson
Our Master of Science degrees (MSAE, MSME) with thesis are intended for graduate students interested in advanced research and advancing their careers in the fields of aircraft and space systems design and mechanical and thermal systems design. We also offer Master of Science degrees with a non-thesis option that are designed to prepare students for professional engineering careers and can be completed online or in the classroom.
Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy degree is pursued by outstanding students with an intense interest in independent study and research. It consists of advanced coursework beyond the master’s degree, a written and oral comprehensive preliminary examination, extended and in-depth research, a written dissertation, and a final oral defense of the research.
Areas of Specialization
- Aerodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Propulsion and Space Exploration Systems
- Dynamics, Vibrations and Controls
- Structural Mechanics, Materials and Manufacturing
- Thermal Sciences and Energy Systems
Can’t make it to campus? Through Engineering Online, we offer two MS degrees (MSAE, MSME), non-thesis only.
