MAE Seminar: Infusing The Undergraduate Experience With The Entrepreneurial Mindset

April 30, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract:

Ohio Northern University (ONU) is a founding partner of KEEN (the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network).   This talk will give an overview of efforts at ONU to achieve our vision of saturating the student experience with the entrepreneurial mindset.  Topics will include:

  • Why we think this matters to ONU and to undergraduate engineering education
  • What tools we have implemented to try to make this easier for faculty
  • What is has meant for a new faculty member starting in the midst of this work
  • How we think we have been able to help schools trying to include the entrepreneurial mindset in their courses and curriculum.

Bio 1:

John-David (J-D) Yoder serves as Dean of the T.J. Smull College of Engineering at Ohio Northern University (ONU) in Ada, Ohio, where he previously served as Chair of mechanical engineering.  Before joining ONU, he was Proposal Engineering Supervisor at Grob System, Inc.  He has held numerous leadership and advisory positions in various entrepreneurial ventures.  He is listed as inventor on 11 patents and has served as a Faculty Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA and an Invited Professor at INRIA Rhone-Alpes, Monbonnot, France.  Research interests include computer vision, mobile robotics, intelligent vehicles, entrepreneurship, and engineering education.

Bio 2:

Blake Hylton is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and coordinator of the first-year engineering experience at Ohio Northern University. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Tulsa and his graduate studies at Purdue, where his focus was in vibrations and structural health monitoring. He is heavily involved in KEEN, currently serving as the chair of the assessment working group and an advisor to the Kern Family Foundation on issues related to assessment. He was also recently named a KEEN National Rising Star award recipient. Current research areas include standards-based assessment methods, engineering design self-efficacy in high school and first-year engineering students, and developing and deploying engineering design activities for high school classrooms.
