MAE Seminar: Scalable Manufacturing Approaches for Biomimetic Engineered Tissues

October 29 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract:  Medical implants play an important role in improving the quality of life of patients affected by injuries and diseases. Whereas implants are traditionally made of bioinert metals and polymers, recent multi-disciplinary scientific and technological advances enable the engineering of living tissue constructs using functional biomaterials and cells. This talk will summarize our recent efforts in the manufacturing of such biomimetic engineered tissue constructs for orthopaedic applications. Scaffold-based and scaffold-free approaches including a new ultrasound-assisted 3D bioprinting process will be…

MAE SEMINAR: Curved Structures That Can Elastically Snap-Through

November 5 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract: One of the most interesting aspects of nonlinear structural behavior is the occurrence of snap-through. The sudden loss of stability under loading, often leading to an inversion of a curved structure, for example, is an event that can be either undesirable or exploited, depending on the situation. The phenomenon can occur either in a static buckling context or under dynamic (cyclic) oscillations. This talk will examine the conditions under which snap-through might occur, using plenty of motivational examples, and…

Dr. Hassan A. Hassan Distinguished Lecture Series: “The Coming Decade of Planetary Science” with Dr. Braun

November 12 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract: In this seminar, Dr. Braun will describe JPL’s (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) present efforts in planetary science and potential future opportunities in this domain. From landing Perseverance on Mars to flying Ingenuity across the red planet to preparing for the exploration of ocean worlds in the distant reaches of our solar system and formulating Mars Sample return, humanity's first roundtrip mission to another planet, a new era of planetary exploration is underway. Dr. Braun will highlight the development and operations…

MAE SEMINAR: “Topic: Ultrafast High Frequency Ultrasound Imaging and Its Biomedical Applications” with Dr. Huang

December 3 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract: The frame rate (the number of images displayed in one second) of current ultrasound imaging machines is about 30-100 fps, which is sufficient for most clinical applications, even echocardiography. However, high frame rate ultrasound imaging, so-called ultrafast ultrasound imaging, has recently been achieved with improvements of ultrasound hardware. One major advantage of ultrafast ultrasound imaging is that it converts the ultrasound image into a “high speed camera”, in which any movement of an object in the view of ultrasound…
