Ekkad elected FRAeS

The department head for NC State University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Srinath Ekkad, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS). 

Founded in the U.K. in 1866, The Royal Aeronautical Society is a multi-disciplinary professional institution that aims to support aerospace communities around the world. It is the oldest aeronautical society in the world and its goals include maintaining high professional standards in aerospace disciplines and serving as a valuable resource on aerospace knowledge to different groups and populations around the world.

Fellowship is the highest attainable grade within the prestigious organization, and is only bestowed upon those in the profession of aeronautics or aerospace. To be considered for fellowship, an individual must also have made outstanding contributions in an aerospace or aerospace-related profession or have attained a position of high responsibility in an aerospace or aerospace-related profession.

Arriving as MAE Department Head in 2017, Ekkad was previously the Rolls-Royce Professor for Aerospace Systems at Virginia Tech, where he also served the Associate VP for Research Programs as well as the Director for the Rolls-Royce University Technology Center for Advanced System Diagnostics.

His research background lies in fundamental thermal-fluid science with emphasis on experimental methods. His area of application expertise is in gas turbine and thermal management of systems and he has worked extensively on various projects dealing with cooling and heat transfer technology relating to turbine engines, automotive systems, energy harvesting and power plant systems.

Ekkad was also recently awarded the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award in November, 2022.
