MAE Students and Faculty bring home multiple COE Awards

Several students and faculty members from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering were recognized with a number of prestigious college-wide awards during the Spring 2023 College of Engineering Awards Ceremony this week.

Among those recognized during the event was mechanical engineering senior and Lead MAE Ambassador Riley Harrison, who not only served as the MAE nominee for the annual COE Senior Leadership Award, but was also selected for the Recognition of Student Organization Chapter Presidents, which is awarded to student organization chapter presidents that have made significant impacts in the women & minority in engineering community at NC State. Harrison currently serves as the President of the NC State chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.

The COE Senior Leadership Award for which Harrison was nominated is one of four annual senior awards for which the nominees are some of best and brightest students at the NC State University College of Engineering, only one student from each department can be nominated for each of the four award categories: Leadership, Scholarly Achievement, Citizenship & Service, and Humanities. Joining Harrison as MAE’s 2023 nominees, Mason Steppa was nominated for the Scholarly Achievement Award, David Horne was nominated for the Citizenship & Service Award, and Carter Wang was nominated for the Humanities Award.

Of the other Woman and Minority Engineering Program Awards, MAE Associate Professor Marie Muller was selected for the Most Supportive Faculty/Staff Award, which is meant to recognize an inspirational staff or faculty member who help recruit and uplift women and underrepresented students to excel academically and professionally through both their actions and contributions.

The Engineering Place Awards were also announced at the ceremony, for which one MAE student and one MAE professor were recognized, dominating the category.

In this category, mechanical engineering student Caleb Jolley was awarded the Engineering Place Exemplary Service Award, which is delegated to one COE student who has demonstrated outstanding service to K-20 education and significantly contributed to the success of The Engineering Place Programs.

In the same category, MAE Assistant Teaching Professor Felix Ewere was selected as the recipient Engineering Place Outstanding K-12 Outreach Collaborator Award, which is awarded to a faculty or staff member who has partnered with The Engineering Place to inspire the next generation of engineering students through collaboration and the development innovative educational programs.

Finally, mechanical engineering student Carre Horrell was recognized during the Benjamin Franklin Scholars Awards as the recipient of the Erin-Malloy-Hanley Award, which recognizes one scholar who displays outstanding ethical conduct.
