The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) hosts over half a dozen student conferences across the United States, where students are encouraged to present research papers. NC State belongs to Region II, and although this year’s spring conference at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa was cancelled due to concerns about COVID-19, students were still able to submit papers for judging.
Andrew Mistele, a rising junior studying Aerospace Engineering, and participating in the MAE Undergraduate Research Scholars Program, submitted a paper to the conference under the mentorship of Professor Ashok Gopalarathnam and Dr. Arun Vishnu Suresh Babu, both of the Applied Aerodynamics Group in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The paper entitled “Discrete-Vortex Method for Modeling Effects of Flow Disturbances on Airfoils” was selected as the winning paper in the Undergraduate Category of competition for Region II.
As part of the award, Mistele has been invited to present the paper at the AIAA SciTech Forum, the world’s largest event for aerospace research, development, and technology. The Forum will be held in January 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee. His paper will be published as part of the Forum’s proceedings.
