Each year the College of Engineering recognizes the accomplishments of graduating senior students with the Engineering Senior Awards. Receiving these awards is one of the highest forms of recognition for a senior in the College.
The awards are presented by the Dean of Engineering at the Engineers’ Council Annual Spring Banquet. The MAE nominees for the college wide competition are: Nicholas Mazzoleni – Scholarly Achievement, Scott Cronson – Citizenship and Service, Raven Lauer – Humanities, and Stephen Scheuerle – Leadership. We are extremely proud of our student’s achievements and wish them the best in their future endeavors.
Scott Cronson – Citizenship and Service
Scott is a Senior Mechanical Engineer who has been involved in various activities during his undergraduate career such as MAE Department Ambassador, College of Engineering Student Senator, Undergraduate Research, and President of his Fraternity. He has gained professional and personal development through multiple internships at Duke Energy, ExxonMobil, and others, as well as a 6 month study abroad in Sweden. In his free time, he enjoys toying around with 3D printing and virtual reality, reading, exercising, and hanging out with friends. After graduation, he is eager to join the Engineering Leadership Developmental Program at Sensus!
Stephen Scheuerle – Leadership
Stephen Scheuerle is from Mooresville, NC and is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. During his time at NC State, Stephen was the president of Sigma Gamma Tau, the aerospace honor society, vice-chair of external affairs for the NC State chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, an Engineering Ambassador, a resident mentor in the Albright Entrepreneurship Village, and involved in Engineer’s Council. In addition, Stephen completed internships at The Aerospace Corporation and NASA Goddard Flight Research Center. He is the co-founder and owner of Live2Build Inc., a summer camp program that aims to teach children the value of art, technology, and innovation through LEGOs, and has always encouraged and supported students entering STEM fields. After graduation, Stephen will go on to pursue a PhD in Aerospace Engineering with a focus in astrodynamics at Purdue University.
Nicholas Mazzoleni – Scholarly Achievement
During his time at NC State, Nicholas received multiple research grants to perform work in the field of aeroelastic energy harvesting in Dr. Bryant’s lab (iSSRL). Through this work, he helped develop a novel solar-wind hybrid energy harvesting device. In addition to his research at NC State, he completed an internship in the Electromechanical Systems Research Department at LORD Corporation where he helped in the development of a novel non-contact torque sensing technique.
Nicholas served as music director of the NC State Catholic Campus Ministry for three years and was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, and the Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society. Nicholas will be staying at NC State to pursue a PhD in mechanical engineering, where he hopes to continue working in Dr. Bryant’s lab, looking to transition toward soft robotics or autonomous systems research.
Raven Lauer – Humanities
Raven grew up with dual passions for aviation and history, which led him to enroll at NC State in Fall 2012 with the intention of getting an Aerospace Engineering degree and a minor in History. After learning about the Ben Franklin Scholars program in 2013, he declared History as his second major with a focus on the French Revolution. Raven also joined the High-Powered Rocketry Club in his Freshman year which introduced him to his third passion: spaceflight. The HPRC allowed him to participate in local outreach events designed to introduce STEM topics, such as Newton’s Laws, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, and rocket propulsion, to local K-12 students. After serving as the club Coordination Officer from 2013-2015, Raven was elected as Vice President, then President for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years, respectively. During his time as President, the club reached over 15,000 K-12 students through various outreach programs during the year.
In 2014, Raven co-founded the Wolf Wings Aviation Interest Club to serve as a social hub for the growing private pilot community at NC State. He has served as the President since its founding and has coordinated airport tours, special topics lectures, and on-campus helicopter static displays. On top of everything else, Raven also served as a student representative on the University Registration, Records, and Calendar Committee which met once per semester to generate and update the academic calendar. Raven is excited to enter the aerospace industry after college, and will be working at Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky division as a helicopter flight test engineer in Pax River, Maryland.
