Blue Force Technologies (“BFT”) – Composites Design/Manufacturing Engineer

Company Summary:

Blue Force Technologies (“BFT”) is an entrepreneurial, growing aerospace structures engineering and manufacturing company founded and located in Raleigh, NC. BFT specializes in design, analysis, and manufacture of cutting-edge carbon-fiber composite structures for an expanding group of aerospace customers in the military, commercial, new space, and unmanned arenas.

Job Description:

Blue Force Technologies (“BFT”) is looking for an entry level Composites Design/Manufacturing Engineer to support its growing production lines of structural composite products for military and commercial aerospace programs. We are looking for energetic professionals, with the combination of “people skills” and technical aptitude that is required to simultaneously build and improve standard processes and procedures while supporting internal and external production customers. A strong background in engineering fundamentals and complex, diverse problem solving is required. A working knowledge of composite design and fabrication techniques is desired. Strong technical report writing skills are also required.

Applicant must be able to handle several projects at the same time and still have an extremely high attention to detail, organization, and planning. As a young, agile company, BFT requires someone for this position who is highly adaptable, a capable and independent problem solver, competitive, internally driven, and mechanically inclined.

Applicant should thrive in a work environment with a spectrum of experience that varies from startup, rapid-development programs to stable production lines, minor sub-assembly to high volume fabrication, small detail parts to large structures, and more. This position is very challenging and is not for “every engineer”, so only serious applicants need apply. However, this position affords opportunities that many large corporations and competing employers cannot provide:

  1. Be on the cutting edge of composite material and structural applications development for a diverse cross section of advanced customers ranging from “new space” companies to US Special Forces.
  2. Help grow a small, locally-tied company with a close knit team of dedicated, industry veterans – you will interface with every employee, including the company president, daily.
  3. Learn all aspects of composite and aerospace structural design from materials and processes to structural design to stress analysis – you will not be segmented into one field of aerospace engineering.
  4. Become an industry expert in composite design and manufacturing well before any of your peers – as a small company everyone at BFT can problem solve across all engineering disciplines.
  5. Work a plethora of simultaneous projects, ranging from UAV component manufacturing to engineering and manufacturing on DARPA R&D programs – it will never be “Ground Hog’s Day” at BFT.
  6. Be able to take projects from conception to fruition under own control – you will be “hands-on” and spend time actually manufacturing and creating on the shop floor, “cubicle fatigue” will never be felt.
  7. Virtually unlimited growth potential, as we require everyone to play a variety of roles depending on the mix of project types we have at any given time.

NOTE: Our interview process is notoriously rigorous, so as to ensure that the applicant is a proper fit into our highly dynamic, team-focused company culture. All resumes are reviewed by an engineer, not a Human Resources robot, so please do not pad your experience with superfluous keywords to try to make the cut. And finally, please do not apply if you are not ready to be challenged to the utmost. This is not a “go hide in your cubicle” position.
Composite Design/Manufacturing Engineering tasks will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Retrieve and interrogate customer or internal models, specifications, and engineering for relevant requirements
  • Incorporate those relevant requirements into manufacturing plans and operations to create conforming products
  • Creation of detailed manufacturing plans to get project from engineered design to fully manufactured product in accordance with strict quality management system requirements
  • Produce material test reports, equipment qualification reports, and other technical documents to support customer requirements and quality management requirements
  • Assist in structural layouts, designs, and stress analysis design projects
  • Be willing to assist “hands-on” in manufacturing processes, as required, to develop new procedures & techniques
  • Support technical questions and concerns of internal manufacturing technicians
  • Handle material purchasing, scheduling, and delivery and handle sub-tier supplier management
  • Interface with various customers weekly or daily to provide status updates, field technical questions, etc.
  • Create, update, and track program schedules that track critical milestones through completion
  • Manage day-to-day operations of assigned projects and programs
  • Help develop and determine new equipment requirements
  • Support new equipment installation and qualification
  • Develop new material applications and processes to improve cost savings
  • Develop tooling designs to support manufacturing and improve efficiencies of production processes
  • Create and track production performance metrics and analysis to gain critical efficiencies
