Special Seminar: “Advanced Manufacturing of Composites for Next-Generation Aerostructures”

February 9, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract:

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are increasingly used in aerospace, space, marine, automotive, biomedical, and energy industries, owing to their excellent specific stiffness and strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. Despite these promising attributes and growing importance in various sectors, lightweight potential of composites in structural applications has not been fully realized by start-of-the-art composite technologies, mainly due to the limited manufacturability and lack of multifunctional performance of current composite materials. Design and development of next-generation lightweight, high-performance structures requires accurate positioning of reinforcements along 3D load paths and creation of complex structures with integrated functionalities to minimize the structural mass, reduce the design complexity, and enhance the reliability of high-performance composite structures. In this talk, I will present our recent developments on advanced manufacturing of composites that have enabled rapid and cost-effective manufacture of multifunctional and complex composite structures for aerospace and energy applications.
