MAE Seminar Series: “Boosting Engineering Innovation Skills to Solve Humanity’s Grand Challenges”

February 10, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract:

Many of humanity’s most pressing and complex challenges demand innovative and creative engineers.  Recent research has created a plethora of tools to help engineers enhance their innovation and creativity.  This talk will highlight a number of findings from the Innovation, Design Reasoning, Engineering Education, and Methods (IDREEM) Lab that addresses this challenge. Engineering innovation can be enhanced through a wide range of approaches.  First, the design process and tools can be directly improved.  Design methods and process improvements can scaffold engineers to identify more novel yet highly effective solutions.  Second, novel learning environments like makerspaces provide a multitude of knowledge and skills in informal environments while not requiring a complete overhaul of the curriculum. The talk will highlight multiple approaches for enhancing engineering design, creativity, and innovation developed and identified by the IDREEM lab.

Tune in at 10 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2022 to watch live.

Bio:

Dr. Julie S. Linsey is a Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technological. Her research area is design cognition, including systematic methods and tools for innovative design with a particular focus on concept generation and design-by-analogy. She also works on design methods, theory, and engineering education. The goal of Dr. Linsey’s research is to discover new knowledge about how engineers think and leverage this knowledge into design methods and engineering education. Her current work includes quantifying the impact of university maker spaces, determining the impact of AI sketch recognition tutoring system on Statics students, and identifying how learning to free-hand sketch facilitates improvements to spatial visualization.  She has authored over 150 technical publications, including over fifty journal papers, six book chapters, and she holds two patents.
