MAE Seminar Series: “Kirigami- and origami-based devices for energy and healthcare”

February 24, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Abstract:

Abundant, clean energy and effective healthcare, delivered at a global scale are pre-requisites to our civilization’s survival and development. Thus, my group’s recent work increasingly has focused on achieving breakthroughs and scalability in these areas via design and engineering of devices and processes for energy conversion, health monitoring, and medicines. In this talk I will focus on an approach that uses simple 2D cut and fold patterns to transform flat sheets into 3D shapes, metamaterials, and compliant mechanisms, and use their emergent properties to achieve superior performance in energy conversion, storage, and wearable sensors.

Tune in at 10 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2022 to watch live.

Bio:

Prof. Shtein earned his Bachelors at UC Berkeley (1994-98) and Doctorate at Princeton (1998-2004), while co-advised by Prof. Benziger in Chemical Engineering and Prof. Forrest in Electrical Engineering. During his PhD, Shtein developed key aspects of Organic Vapor Phase Deposition and invented Organic Vapor Jet Printing, technologies which have been commercialized for the production of OLEDs. He joined the Materials Science and Engineering department at the University of Michigan in 2004, where he now serves as Professor, with appointments across multiple departments, teaching core and multi-disciplinary courses to students from the first year to advanced post-graduate levels. His work has been recognized through several awards:  Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), MSE Department Achievement Award, College of Engineering-wide Vulcans Prize for Excellence in Education, Newport Award for Excellence and Leadership in Photonics and Optoelectronics, Materials Research Society (MRS) graduate student Gold Medal Award, and others. He co-founded and raised funding for Arborlight, LLC (a multiple award-winning lighting technology company), and Sublime, LLC (a pharmaceutical technology company). He co-authored the book “Scalable Innovation:  A Guide for Inventors, Entrepreneurs, and IP Professionals.” (Taylor & Francis).
