Dr. Fuh-Gwo Yuan was recently selected as an awardee for the 2019 Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professorship Award. The Selection Committee was unanimous in their praise of Dr. Yuan’s exceptional history of promoting and supporting multiple facets of graduate education at NC State. Particularly impressive were the letters of nomination written by former and current students, which attested to the extraordinary quality of mentoring that he has provided during and after their graduate studies at NC State.

Each year, the Alumni Association honors faculty who excel in the classroom, laboratory and in the field through outstanding graduate-level teaching. Nominations are made for these awards by deans, department heads, peers and students. Faculty members receive recognition at the spring awards ceremony, honoring their dedication and commitment to NC State’s core values— teaching, research, and extension. With each of these awards, the professor receives a $4,000 stipend.

Former graduate students continue to reach out to Dr. Yuan for guidance and mentorship long after graduation and have even introduced other family members to him. Dr. Yuan has been the adviser to 3 sets of brothers, and his influence even crosses generations. Mr. Andrew Choi worked with Dr. Yuan on his MS thesis, as did his father, who completed his Ph.D. 20 years earlier. Additionally, his students have received numerous research awards such as Best Paper Award, Best Student Paper Award, Best Thesis Award in the Departmental Ph.D. student research competition, as well as at national and international conferences. Eight of Dr. Yuan’s students currently work as professors around the world.

Previous recipients for this award from MAE included: Dr. Mehmet N. Ozisik (1989), Fred R. DeJarnette (1990), Hassan A. Hassan (1991)
