Students share research at 2023 MAE Symposium

Students, faculty and friends from across the University gathered in the Duke Energy Hall at James E. Hunt Library on Centennial Campus late last month for the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering’s 2023 Graduate Research Symposium.

The Symposium is held each spring and it includes poster presentations from more than 50 MAE graduate students. Posters are judged by faculty, and students receive recognition for top posters. The goal of the symposium is to to showcase the outstanding quality of graduate-level research within the department while providing students with the opportunity to present their research and enhance their professional communication skills.

This year, 78 symposium participants were split at random into two poster presentation sessions on Friday, Feb. 24, after which first and second place poster winners were selected for each section. The winners were selected via anonymous virtual voting. Guests and participants scanned a QR code that would allow them to access the voting ballot that limited them to one vote per account to prevent people from voting for themselves or others more than once. Voting was closed approximately one hour after the end of each session.

First place winners

Shyam Prasad V Atri took home first prize during Session A with his poster titled “Computational – Experimental Study on Particle Removal via Electrically Charged Multilayer Nonwovens.”

Additionally, Md Raf E UI Shougat won first prize during Session B after he presented his poster “Machine Learning potential of a Liénard type Oscillator.”

Second place winners

Akash Jerome won second prize in Session A with his poster titled “Effect of DC electric field on Particles seeded flames.”

Likewise, Saroj Subedi was selected second prize winner for Session B after he presented his poster “Exploring the Potential of the DLP System for Fabricating Sub-100 Micron Features: An Application towards Superomniphobic Surfaces.”

Congratulations to all of the students who participated, and thank you to all all of the guests who attended to learn about MAE graduate student research.
