MAE UNDERGRADUATE: Course Repeat Policies
First Year Repeat Policy*
Students who earn a grade lower than C- on courses taken during their first year at NC State have the opportunity to retake up to two of those courses with no penalty. Upon successful completion of the course the second time, the original grade will be removed from the GPA calculation. However, the repeated courses will still appear on the transcript with an "R" to indicated the course was repeated using the first year repeat policy.
In order to use a first year repeat, students must submit a form to Registration & Records on or before the last day to drop a course without a grade at the 400-level and below in the semester in which the second attempt occurs. This form can be found in the MAE Undergraduate Office (BR 2229) or downloaded online*. The second attempt must be no later than one year after the first attempt (e.g. a student who made a D- in MA 141 in Fall 2005 may retake the course in Spring 2006, Summer 2006, or Fall 2007). The first year repeat can only be used for courses at the 200-level and below. The first year repeat cannot be "saved" to use on courses taken beyond the first year at NC State.
Course Repeats Beyond the First Year
Students who fail or do not meet a C-wall requirement in a course taken after their first year at NC State are responsible for retaking the course and earning a satisfactory grade. There is no grade replacement. Both grades will factor into the GPA. Courses in which a student earns a C- or better may not be retaken.
