Curriculum Development is an important role of the NCSGC. Through the sponsorship of the NCSGC, NCA&T developed a course curriculum to incorporate an Aerospace Engineering option in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. At Duke University and NCSU, the NCSGC provided support for special space engineering and design courses.

The NCSGC sponsors many activities for the general public. They include special lectures for civic and professional organizations about space activities, tours of laboratory facilities and sponsorship of the StarDate radio program. In addition to these activities, faculty and students serve as a resource for the news media when information and comments are needed about various space activities.
The NCSGC is very active in K-12 education. Visiting Scientist and Summer Enrichment Programs as well as educational workshops are just a few of the activities sponsored by the NCSGC. Faculty and students share their knowledge and offer exciting activities for students in several pre-college age groups.
The annual Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) at NCA&T exposes underrepresented minorities, females and the physically challenged to careers in engineering and science through experimental and hands-on activities.
The Visiting Scientist Program at NCSU places a faculty member in a local classroom for one day a week during a semester. This faculty member works with the classroom instructor to develop interesting activities to enhance the curriculum and the students' interest in space and its related fields.

Some member institutions in the NCSGC are fortunate to have well-developed research infrastructures while others are in need of funding. Small grants are given as seed money to faculty and students doing underfunded research that would be of interest to NASA.

The National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program was authorized by Congress to help maintain, through the nation’s universities United States capabilities in aerospace science and technology. The primary goals of the North Carolina Space Grant Consortium include development of undergraduate and graduate curricula in space science and engineering, sponsorship of both graduate and undergraduate research, and the recruitment and retention of minorities, women and the physically challenged into space-related fields.
