NC Space Grant Consortium Community College Scholarship

The NC Space Grant Consortium Community College Scholarship applications are now availabe. These scholarships are awarded competitively to community college students in NC who will be transferring to one of the eight Space Grant Universities. Application deadline has been extend to August 31.

Space Biology (BO 277) Offered in Spring Semester Through Distance Education

Space Biology will be offered on-line through Distance Educcation in January 2005. It is an undergraduate course taught by Dr. Chris Brown at North Carolina State University. He and other experts in the field offer an overview of the biology of plants, animals and humans in the space environment, including gravitational biology, aerospace medicine, search for extraterrestrial life, and life support. Sally Ride TOYchallenge in Raleigh

Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, is hosting a Sally Ride TOYchallenge Regional Showcases at their new building in the RTP, Raleigh, Sunday April 25. Come and join us! TOYchallenge is a wonderful national competition for girls and boys in grades 5-8, to design and invent their very own toy or game. NASA Aerospace Educator Services Program (AESP) Returns to Charlotte!

The N.C. Space Grant Consortium in partnership with the Beatties Ford Branch Library in Charlotte, N.C. requested the NASA Aerospace Education Services Program (AESP) visit during its February community outreach program focusing on Space. This year the NC Space Grant Consortium partnered with the Beatties Ford Road Branch library to create unique community awareness about aeronautics and aerospace on February 12&13, 2004. Benefits of Space Trailer Exhibit Returns!

Last year the North Carolina Space Grant Consortium in partnership with the Catawba Science Center brough NASA Johnson Space Center's premiere Benefits of Space Trailer to the western part of North Carolina to provide an opportunity for the citizens of N.C. to learn the benefits of NASA developed technologies in their everyday lives. The traveling exhibit once again is open for public including school children and teachers, college students, university faculty, business community, and economic developers. This year the exhibit N.C A&T will service the eastern part of the state. NCAT is one of our member schools which make up the NCSGC. This exhibit continues the mission to help share NASA mission to inspire the next generation of space explorers. Click here for details.

Planning Meeting for NIA Educators Workshop Scheduled for Feb. 6

Children’s Dreams of Flight Take Off in New Play (NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART PRESS RELEASE)

Dreams of Flight, a new play for families about a girl who yearns to become an astronaut, premieres December 6 at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. Kenan Fellow, Students Helping NASA With High-Tech Mars Tumbleweed (NCSU BULLETIN FEATURE)

The tumbling tumbleweed, a symbol of the stark prairie solitude of the American West, may one day roll across the red wastes of Mars on a wandering high-tech search for water and life.
That’s the concept behind a NASA project led by Dr. Fred R. DeJarnette, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State, who – in a choice as surprising as a wind-blown weed on Red Planet plains – enlisted a Kenan Fellow teacher and her sixth-grade class to help with design and testing of prototypes. NASA Scientist Makes Science and Math Accessible (NASA PRESS RELEASE)

NASA math whiz and computer software designer Robert O. Shelton uses his math and computer expertise to head up JSC's contributions to NASA's Learning Technologies Project. He works on technology tools for teachers and students in kindergarten through 12th grade. NC Space Grant Consortium Director and Kenan Fellow to Present in Lisbon, Portugal

Holly Hanrahan, 2002 Kenan Fellow, and her University Mentor (and NCSGC Director), Dr. Fred DeJarnette presented their collaborative Tumbleweed Project at the International Workshop on Planetary Probe Atmospheric Entry and Descent Trajectory Analysis and Science in Lisbon, Portugal. Wright Brothers' Competitions

These competitions are a joint effort between NCSGC and The Science House celebrating the accomplishments of Orville and Wilbur Wright during this centennial year of flight. A different monthly competition is available for students to enter from August 2003 through February 2004. Prizes will be awarded monthly at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
