NC Space Grant Undergraduate Research Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: March 17, 2006

Each year NC Space Grant awards undergraduate research scholarships to students attending its member institutions who are pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This competitively awarded program engages the future STEM workforce in hand-on, aero/space-related, research projects and facilitates the development of mentor relationships between students, faculty and the NASA community.

Applications are evaluated based upon the students academic achievement, quality of proposed research project, letter of recommendation from their research mentor, and exhibited leadership qualities.

Applicants may carry out their research project at their home institution either during the academic year (award up to $2,000) or during the summer (award up to $4,000) or at a NASA center or industrial contractor (award up to $7,000). All research projects must be conducted under the general supervision of the applicants research mentor.

Upon completion of the award period a final report is due to NC Space Grant.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be classified as a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a bachlors degree in a science, engineering, technology, or mathematics discipline of interest to NASA at a NC Space Grant member university.

  • Applicants must be United States citizens.

  • Research projects should be space or aeronautics related or have a space or aeronautics application.

  • Projects must be conducted under the direct supervision of a research mentor.

  • Applicants are only eligible to receive the same award twice.

Application

The application consists of the following items:

  • On-line application form - Due March 17, 2006

  • Supporting Documentation - Due within 7 calendar days of application due date
    • On-line letter of recommendation from research mentor
    • Official transcript, through the completion of the fall semester, from the university the applicant is currently attending
    • Official transcripts from all universities and/or colleges at which the applicant has completed 10 or more credit hours
