Research Areas:

Dr. Buckner's research focuses on the development of surgical tools to facilitate robotic cardiac surgery. Working collaboratively with heart surgeons at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine, the objective is to develop prototype tools specifically designed to overcome current limitations of minimally invasive, robot-assisted (MIRA) mitral valve surgery. With advanced surgical tools and techniques, the time and expense associated with MIRA mitral valve repair can be significantly reduced. Specifically, this research and development focuses on:
  • Suturing and knot-tying devices specifically designed for
    tele-manipulated instruments

  • Reliable and efficient intra-atrial retraction to improve indirect
    (videoscopic) visualization of mitral valves

  • Surgical navigation technology to plan incisions and instrument
trajectories around the unique cardiac anatomy of each patient
