Pi Tau Sigma is the nationally recognized mechanical engineering honor society. Pi Tau Sigma was established in 1915 at the University of Illinois and since has grown to 160 chapters throughout the country with several chapters internationally. The Pi Alpha chapter here at North Carolina State University was established on March 27, 1942 and averages around 10 to 20 new inductees each year.
From its conception, the constitution of Pi Tau Sigma has stated, “The object of this organization shall be to encourage and recognize superior scholarship, to foster the high ideals of the engineering profession, to stimulate interest in coordinating departmental activities, to promote the mutual professional welfare of its members, and to develop in students of mechanical engineering the attributes necessary for effective leadership and the taking up the responsibilities of a citizen living in a democracy.”
Membership in Pi Tau Sigma distinguishes students as being among the top in their class and department as well as help students stand out when applying for jobs. As a lifetime member, there are great opportunities to run for officer positions and gain leadership experience as well as network with fellow top mechanical engineers. As a chapter we strive to bring corporate sponsors to our meetings to encourage close ties between students and their future employers. We also cosponsor a tutoring program with ASME available to all mechanical engineers seeking a little extra help with classes.
Membership in Pi Tau Sigma is by invitation only. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Undergraduate students who are in the top quarter of the junior class and top third of the senior class are eligible. Graduate students are eligible with recommendations from two faculty members who are also members of Pi Tau Sigma. Inductions are held twice a year in the fall and spring semesters. New inductees are required to participate in Pi Tau Sigma sponsored service projects, polish a Pi Tau Sigma brass key, conduct faculty interviews and attend the induction banquet.
More information is available on the webpage at http://students.engr.ncsu.edu/pts/ . We would like to encourage everyone to pursue joining Pi Tau Sigma and consider it an investment in your career in mechanical engineering!
