The 2007 ASME Student Professional Development Regional Conference (SPDRC) was held March 23-25 at the University of South Carolina . Eight universities from the southeast were represented. Seventeen members of the NCSU ASME student chapter attended the conference.
Two NCSU students, Aditi Shah and Niyati Shah, gave oral presentations. The topics of their presentations were, respectively, “Railway Spike Setting System” and “Artificial Muscle Powered Glove for the Rehabilitation of Recovering Stroke Patients.” Three NCSU students were also recognized at the conference: Matthew Hobbs and Laura Mazurek received third place for their entry in the Web Page Competition, and Libby Schulte was awarded the position of the Student Section Committee Student Representative for the District.
The ASME SPDRC includes an annual design competition. Schools competing in this year's competition were required to design and build a manually powered device to distill contaminated water. The competition goal was to generate the largest amount of clean water in one hour. The NCSU design team was Matthew Hobbs, James Nguyen, David Huntington, Andrew Phy, James Kribs, Daniel Khodaparast, and Matthew Kelly. NCSU's design placed third in the competition. Special thanks to Dr. Jim Leach, faculty advisor to the NCSU ASME design team.
