ASME Design Team Takes Second Place at National Competition
November 15, 2005
By Mike Geci, ASME Design Team Member

The ASME design team took second place in the highly competitive ASME National Student Design Competition in Orlando, Florida on November 6, 2005. The team, nicknamed “Herman,” consisted of Robert Dorosko, Derek Gaines, Mike Geci and Noah Young. Thanks to the experience gained from the regional competition and the dedication this semester, the team was able to improve the robot to carry twice the load of the original design.

The aim of this year's design competition was to simulate the delivery of ore from a mine to a processing facility. The remote-controlled device was required to be less than 25x25x30 cm. The requirements were to move rice (the “ore”) up three steps, turn, move down a step, deposit the ore in a container, and return to the starting area for refill. The team that moved the most rice in ten minutes was the winner .

A cash prize was awarded to the team members and also to the NCSU ASME Student Section. A new design team is being assembled for the spring 2006 regional competition. A description can be found at http://www.asme.org/students/Competitions/designcontest/2006/sip_and_puff.html*. Sponsors are also welcome to support the project. If you are interested in participating as a team member or sponsor the team, please email asme@ncsu.edu . We would like to extend special thanks to the people and organizations that supported and aided our efforts. In addition, we gratefully acknowledge David Vincentson, MAE Alum Class of 2005, for his work on the original design for the 2005 ASME Regional Competition upon which this year's design was based.
