Franzon, Kuznetsov Garner Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Awards
September 7, 2005
From Engineering News at NC State

The Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Awards for 2005 were presented to Dr. Paul D. Franzon, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Electronics Research Lab, and Dr. Andrey V. Kuznetsov, associate professor of mechanical engineering, at the fall faculty meeting for the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University. Franzon received the Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award, made to a senior faculty member for research achievements over a period of at least five years at NC State. Kuznetsov was awarded the Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award, intended to recognize young faculty who have accomplished outstanding research achievements during the preceding three years.

Franzon is recognized as one of the top electronic interconnect specialists in the world, having made many key contributions in chip and package level interconnect and in VLSI and nanotechnology. Among his most notable contributions are the invention and development of AC Coupled Interconnect, which improves the density and power efficiency in chips; the development of methods and tools to support chip-package co-design; the invention and development of interconnect technologies for emerging nano-electronics systems; and the development of the NCSU Cadence MOSIS kit. His leadership has led to groundbreaking work in the area of multichip module technology, and he is responsible for several innovations in the design of Applications Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC).

Kuznetsov is a leading expert in porous media flows, and he pioneered the utilization of the optimal control theory for transient convection in porous media. He was a leader in the development of a theory of forced convection heat transfer in heterogeneous porous media, and he recently started a new research area in bioconvection in porous media. His colleagues note that his strength lies in his ability to reduce technically significant problems to analytically tractable models. One of the most highly respected young researchers in the area of transport phenomena in porous media and heat transfer, Dr. Kuznetsov is a prolific author.

Dr. Nino A. Masnari, dean of the College of Engineering, and Dr. Sarah A. Rajala, associate dean of Research and Graduate Programs, congratulate Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Award recipients Dr. Paul D. Franzon (center, left picture), professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Electronics Research Lab, and Dr. Andrey V. Kuznetsov (center, right picture), associate professor of mechanical engineering.
