NASA Chief Scientist Bushnell to Speak at NC State
March 15, 2006
From COE News

A joint colloquium by the departments of Mathematics and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University will feature Dennis M. Bushnell, chief scientist at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center. The colloquium will be held April 10 at 4 p.m. in 201 Harrelson Hall.

Bushnell's address, “The Bots, Borgs, and (Genetically Modified) Humans Welcome You to 2025 A.D.,” subtitled “A ‘Wave-Top' Tour Through Emerging Technologies and Their Potential Applications and Implications,” will explore how technology can affect the future.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering and recipient of numerous awards, Bushnell holds five patents. As chief scientist, he is responsible for technical oversight and advanced program formulation at NASA Langley Research Center. Inventor and developer of the “Riblet” approach to turbulent drag reduction, Bushnell's accomplishments include high speed “Quiet Tunnels” for flight-applicable boundary layer transition research, advanced computational approaches for laminar flow control and advanced hypervelocity airbreathing and aeronautical concepts with revolutionary performance potential. He has worked on high profile NASA programs, including Gemini, Apollo, Viking, F-18E/F and Shuttle.

For more information about the colloquium, contact Dr. Semyon V. Tsynkov at (919) 515-1877 or send email to tsynkov@math.ncsu.edu.
