At NCSU, Dr.
Zhu teaches "Solid Mechanics" (UG), "Strength of Mechanical Components" (UG) and "Micro/Electromechanical Systems" (Graduate).
He
believes an
excellent teaching is built upon four elements: passion, starting
from the fundamentals, practice and mentorship. The main distinction between
excellent and mediocre educators is that the former are driven by their
passion
for their fields and for communicating this to others while the
latter’s
objective is just to explain the material. Starting from the
fundamentals is
essential for any course. Students with a solid understanding of the
fundamentals are prepared for almost any complex problem that may arise
in
their future practices. Practicing is one of the most valuable
techniques to
truly grasp the knowledge, no shortcuts. A good instructor should
always be
able to bring up interesting homework and exam problems. The last but
not least
element is mentorship. A responsible faculty member should help
students to
become more mature both as a scientist and as a person.
