Grants and Projects
Current Research Projects

  • Post-Stall Flight Unsteady Aerodynamic Study and Gain-Scheduled Controller Design (NASA CAREER Award for Dr. Wu) Investitators Fen Wu and Ashok Gopalarathnam Sponsor NASA Langley Research Center (NAG 1-01119) Duration 9/1/2001 - 8/31/2005

The aim of this multidisciplinary research project is to advance the state of the art in aerodynamic characterization and flight control of aircraft at high post-stall angles of attack. Novel approaches for post-stall aerodynamics using a nonlinear extension to the vortex-lattice method are being developed for steady and unsteady aerodynamic characterization of multiple wings at high angles of attack. The aerodynamic models will then be utilized for control system design to integrate aerodynamic and thrust-vectoring control effectors. Gain-scheduled controller based on systematic LPV control theory will be designed for longitudinal and lateral control.

  • The Integrated Research on Distributed Control for Large-Scale Dynamically-Interconnected Systems Investigator Fen Wu Sponsor National Science Foundation (ECS-0300037) Duration 6/1/2003-5/31/2006

This project seeks to exploit the connections among communication, control and computation and develop distributed control techniques for large-scale, dynamically-interconnected systems by synthesizing ideas from control theory and optimization techniques. The distributed control strategy will provide interconnected systems with simplified control implementation and improved system reliability. Moreover, significant performance improvement will be achieved by applying on-line optimizations to such complex systems. The distributed control techniques will be applied to a challenging problem of controlling micro-cantilever arrays in AFM, for which the distributed control is envisioned as an enabling technology to realize its full potential.

  • Global/Semi-Global Stabilizing, Local Optimized Gain-Scheduling Control Design for Nonlinear Systems Investigator Fen Wu Sponsor National Science Foundation (CMS-0324397) Duration 6/1/2003-5/31/2006

This project will focus on global gain-scheduling control development and its application to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The global gain-scheduling control framework will provide a systematic control design technique with optimized local performance and guaranteed global/semi-global stability, and overcome the computational complexity of nonlinear optimal control problem. By exploiting the functional dependency of nonlinear vector field, significantly improved LPV analysis and control design techniques will be developed using the sum-of-squares (SOS) decomposition. The application of proposed gain-scheduling control technique to UAVs will demonstrate increased UAV capabilities, and would greatly improve the performance and safety of commercial, military, and personal aircraft.
